Hmmm... maybe it's your mom's fault. We blame everything on moms, right? Seriously - this episode - check it out.

To answer our question today, let's go to our resident expert the Nose with an Attitude. Oh great nose with an attitude, why am I allergic? Let's go to the expert. Well, it's not really magic. You know that. Just a plastic nose.

[Earth rumbling] What is this?

"I am to magic. I know the answer."

The nose knows!

"Now I won't tell you."

Such an attitude.

Okay, I'll answer the question.

Why? Why me? Why all these symptoms?

What's happening every day out there for those of you suffering from allergies, there's an invisible battle going on between your immune system and what's floating around outside. It's not that these allergens are attacking you. It's that your body is misunderstanding it. Your body is designed to protect you from virus, from fungus, from bacteria, from pathogens, and it mistakes some innocent material floating around in the world as some kind of an invader. It tries to protect your body and that's basically the battle that's occurring.

So what do you want? What do you do about it?

What you want is a highly educated immune system so you can know who to go after and who not to go after. That's what we like to deliver for you at the Modern Nose Clinic.

How to Treat Allergy

When it comes to treatment of allergy in general, what you want to do is:

  • Avoidance - Avoid that to which you're most allergic
  • Pharmacotherapy - a fancy way of saying take medications
  • Immunotherapy - With immunotherapy you can educate your immune system. Tell it stop overreacting to all these innocent things. I want to go outside when that weather is nice I don't want to have to have a sneezing fit and congestion and so on and so forth. So just chill it.

Avoidance

For avoidance, check out our other videos. Go to our website modernnoseclinic.com and check out our video library where you can explore and learn more. We put a lot of time into those videos. I think they'll help a lot of people out. You can also send them to friends and family members with our send it function. So just check that out - the little email logo at the bottom of the video library section.

It's really nice to know what you're allergic to because if you don't know what you're allergic to you you just start avoiding things randomly and that's hard. Often times when we allergy test people, they find that there are things they thought they were allergic to that they're not, and there's things that they are allergic to that they didn't know about.

So, for instance, they might say I just know I'm gonna be allergic to my cat and I'm not gonna get rid of my cat, so I don't want to be allergy tested. Totally get it. And in fact, they're allergic to dust mite and it turns out the cat has dust mite on them just as do people. And there are ways of dust mite proofing your household and then keep the cat and they don't worry about it. So, I gotta tell you, when you know what you're allergic to, avoidance makes a lot more sense.

Pharmacotherapy

I'm gonna do an entire video on medicines for allergy you get over-the-counter to try to guide people. There's a lot of things that are over-the-counter and that's been great and fantastic for many but not for everybody. Sometimes you want to have someone guide you in regards to the best selection of medications. We're happy to do that for you.

Immunotherapy

The third is immunotherapy where you actually cure your allergy. Immunotherapy means that we expose your immune system to a small amount of that to which you're allergic and we increase that over time. Your immune system says, "oh, well that's not so bad" and it doesn't overreact - and we get to higher and higher concentration in a very safe manner over time. This continues until your immune system decides not to overreact anymore. Then we do a shot therapy or other therapy to re-educate your immune system.

So that's that's it for me.
