Welcome to the Modern Nose Clinic. We know your nose. This is a 13-year-old girl who had an awake nasal surgery at the Modern Nose Clinic. Listen to her story.
Dr. Skarada:
So this is Doug Skarada here at the Modern Nose Clinic, and we've got a really special patient here with us today. She is – how old are you?
Patient:
13
Dr. Skarada:
We're not going to use your name, but she's 13 years old. And did you have an awake sinus surgery done here?
Patient:
Yes
Dr. Skarada:
And what was it like?
Patient:
It was – I feel a lot better. My symptoms have really decreased, and it's a big big difference.
Dr. Skarada:
Weren't you in the midst of going up to OHSU because you were really incapacitated?
Patient:
Mhm.
Dr. Skarada:
There's a tough one for you. It's not like you were pretending. It was some pretty serious stuff, and were you scared about having an awake surgery?
Patient:
I – a little bit, but I felt fine doing it here. So.
Dr. Skarada:
What was it like the day of the surgery. Do you have very many memories of it or not a whole lot?
Patient:
Not a bunch, but I kind of just remember going in, and I was awake, and I could feel stuff, and it wasn't too bad.
Dr. Skarada:
What was the recovery like? Were you able to get back to normal pretty quickly?
Patient:
Yes. Very quickly.
Dr. Skarada:
Look how quickly – she's an athlete, for those who may not know her. She is a really high end of softball player, and she was playing right through the summer. How – you know – for someone else thinking about this, how quickly would they get back to normal?
Patient:
The first night was rough, doing the rinse after the first surgery. But then the next day, I did feel a lot better, and it was a very quick recovery.
Dr. Skarada:
That's awesome. Thank you. And this is Mom. Which you don't have a picture, but we've got mom's voice. Yeah. Any thoughts?
Mother:
So thankful for finding Dr. Skarada. Stella's a hundred percent better than what she was. He's really saved her life, essentially. Her breathing life.
Dr. Skarada:
Yeah.
Mother:
So.
Dr. Skarada:
I can still remember when we did that CT scan, and the CT showed all this infection, and it was kind of like a light bulb went off. That's how I remember it.
Mother:
Yes.
Dr. Skarada:
We're like, "Oh my gosh. This actually explains a whole bunch." Right?
Mother:
Yeah. He found the mystery that had been hiding there for over a year. So.
Dr. Skarada:
And I really think that the kind of way we worked at it, like as a team, all three of us, and that's why it went so well. Alright. Well, thank you guys for sharing that.
Our 13-year-old patient would want you to know that if a 13-year-old can do this surgery, so can you. Thank you.
